The Tipperary is London’s most historic Irish pub. Of course with any Irish pub to make it authentic you need Guinness – and The Tipperary was remarkably the first pub to serve Guinness outside of Ireland anywhere in the world Our original name was The Boar’s Head and it is documented as far back as 1605. As you enter the pub look down at the slate step and you will see the faint word Mooney’s carved into the slate. This step is the original that was installed in the early 17th century when the pub was bought by the Irish brewery chain Mooney & Son. The name was changed after the end of World War 1 as the Irish had sung the song “it’s a long way to Tipperary…’ to boost moral amongst our soldiers. As many of the Irish returned from the war to work on Fleet Street as printers and reporters it was fitting to rename the pub in their honour.
